[ Nikolai's mind is working quick. They can't let the occasion go un-celebrated! He's not going to let this place take a little bit of cheer and hope away from someone like Onni, who probably needs every bit he can get. ]
Well, normally I'd figure out how he would like to celebrate by using my charming personality and appealing to his associates, but none of us here know one another all that well. A regular non-burning cake does seems like a good start.
You said 'around now'. How many days have I got to plan? Or are we talking about hours?
[If they were speaking in person, he might have puffed up his chest a little with that proclamation. Brook likes to be important, to have valuable skills or information, and here he is with the intel Nikolai wants.]
he said that a party was too much. and he said that his birthday was a little over two weeks from... whenever it was we were talking to the bday guy. i'm pretty sure it was about two weeks ago. he didn't give a date so i'm not sure when exactly it should be.
[ He hadn't realized Brook and Onni were quite so close, but now he knows better. Brook's attention to detail leaves a little to be desired in this case. Different people have different strengths. Nikolai will just have to figure out the exact date some other way. ]
Maybe something smaller than a party. The two of us could give him a cake and some small gifts. What if we brought some games we could play together? I'm sure if I look around this place I can find some dice or cards at the very least.
i think that would be ok. i don't remember any card games, but we probly wouldn't all know one another's anyway. so you or onni can teach me if you need more than two players.
or if you can't find games, maybe we could do music? singing's popular at celebrations, right?
I know enough card and dice games for all of us, and I'm happy to teach them to both of you.
Singing's an excellent idea, though I need to be honest I don't have any special talent for it. I could look for a flute, though. I'm better at piano but that might be trickier to transport.
Do you play any instruments?
What is Onni's favorite type of cake, do you know?

do ppl put candles on cakes for birthdays where you're from?
1/2
No, we don't have that tradition. It sounds like it would get messy fast.
2/2
Is it your birthday?

a guy i was talking to said a bday cake had to have candles on it, but i think i'll just put them on the side. it sounds stupid.

i was gonna get him chocolate cake. everyone likes chocolate, right?
[I.e., he has no idea and he has no plans to ask.]

Chocolate it is.
I'll ask him when his birthday is. No way to do it subtly as far as I can tell, but it'll only partly ruin the surprise.
